We will be screening the film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (2013). You will submit a 1 page
written paper identifying and analyzing 1 political conflict that you observed in the film. You will
be using all the course material to evaluate the conflicts and prepare recommendations that you
would advise the parties on a pathway forward. The paper part of this project must be in 12pt
font using Times New Roman. You should use 1-inch margins. Use double-spacing for all
assignments. Also, you must use APA Style (6th Edition) for references and for formatting.
Steps:
1. The film focuses on the larger conflict of South African Apartheid unfolding over a period of
time, creating ripple effects of many leadership challenges, personal and professional conflicts in
Nelson Mandela’s life. Keep this in mind as you take notes.
2. c. Analyze one Political Conflict #3 (negotiation) using the principled negotiator approach
outlined Getting to Yes by Fisher, Ury & Patton.
3. Things to include in your research, analysis, presentation and paper:
a. Definitions of a conflict, a difficult conversation and a negotiation. b. Brief
background/overview about the conflict of Apartheid in South Africa.
4. With each analysis, make recommendations about what did and did not happen as well as how
YOU would advise the various parties to make a way forward and resolve the conflicts they
encountered.
