Assignment Instructions
- Each student should identify, analyze, and research an example of commemorative landscapes at NCSU. Students are to take pictures the example used in the assignment and write 3-4 paragraphs of analysis (paragraph defined as 3-5 sentences on an idea/point). The paragraphs should include:
- The location of the commemorative object–which campus and where is it on campus?
- Who or what the object commemorates.
- How the person or event connects to the university’s past.
- How the commemorative object connects the university to larger topics and themes in US history after 1865 identified in the course material. Students must consult with secondary sources providing additional context on the topic/theme addressed by the commemorative objects to include historical context for the object.
- Each entry must include discussion of primary sources in the course material connecting the university to the nation’s past.
- It is not enough to simply identify the era as a connection between the object and primary sources (ex: WWI). Entries must demonstrate critical thinking about what the commemorative object, and its background, tells us about about the people and events of the past and/or how those who erected the commemorative object thought about the related people and/or events as it relates to the primary sources.
- Please use (Reynolds Coliseum) (https://historicalstate.lib.ncsu.edu/search/?q=Reynolds+Coliseum).
