Visual Analysis of a Photo Essay (15%)“A photograph shouldn’t be just a picture; it should be a philosophy” (Amit Kalantri).“Still photographs are the most powerful weapon in the world. The images that I selected can be found in the Unit 5: Visual Analysis folder in the online classroom.Your goal is to articulate the photographer’s claims and then discuss visual techniques that the photographer uses to convey those claims. In other words, you are analyzing WHAT you think the photographs “say”and HOW they say it. Assume that Nelson is taking a consistent and coherent position on the subject about which he is trying to persuade an international audience and that he is not merely trying to inform viewers about the subject or presenting both sides.General

1.Length:The essay must be at least 750words long.
2.Introduction and thesis statement:The introduction should engage the reader’s interest; introduce the subject, photo essay and photographer; and present your thesis statement. Your thesis statement should appear at the end of the introduction and should signal the essay’s main ideas: the photographer’s claims and the visual technique she uses to assert them.
3.Organization:The essay must contain at least five paragraphs: an introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The body paragraphs should discuss the claims that you think the photographer is making and the visual techniques(angle, framing, lighting, color, repetition, focus, background, and so forth) that he employs to assert those claims. Write at least two body paragraphs about the claims and at least one body paragraph about the visual techniques for a total of at least three body paragraphs. See the outline that I posted in the Visual Rhetoric folder.
4.Content: Remember that a body paragraph should contain several supporting details, not just analysis of a single detail. In this case, in each body paragraph give evidence from multiple photographs. Also, when you refer to the images, describe each one in sufficient detail so that I know which one that you are referring to and how you arrived at your conclusion about the claim that it conveys or the visual technique that it illustrates.
5.Diction: Using the rules of standard written English, address the essay to your peers and me. This essay is more formal, so do not include second-person pronouns (e.g. “you,” “your”), and avoid first-person pronouns (e.g. “I,” “we”) unless you are using a personal anecdote as an example in the introduction and/or conclusion.
6.Evaluation:In terms of content, I’m mainly interested in what interesting insights you have about the photo essay and will evaluate the essay in terms of how thoroughly it analyzes the photo essay. I also look closely at the essay’s organization and structure (i.e. the presence of a specific thesis statement and topic sentences). Otherwise, the essay should reflect an awareness of the criteria by which I have evaluated previous essays. By this point in the semester, you should have internalized the elements of an essay listed on the previous grading sheets.
7.Research: None. 8.Format: The essay must be double-spaced with 12-point font and one-inch margins, and the first line of each paragraph should be indented one-half inch (a tab).
