*Evidence of the time you’ve put into learning and thinking about the course material (lectures, readings, videos, podcasts, etc). *An ability to express yourself clearly in writing, and to demonstrate your understanding of the course material in writing. Remember that the best writing tip is to EDIT, EDIT, EDIT. Students never do this, but it will make your work so much better. I promise. Tips for Writing the Answers to the Lecture Questions • The goal is not to give your opinion but to show me how deeply you’ve understood the course material. This doesn’t mean you can’t personalize your answer and make it your own. I want you to develop your own voice, your own style of academic writing. The best way to do this is to listen to the lecture, take notes, review your notes and then sit in front of a blank page with the question in mind and just write what comes out. You’ll be surprised how much you’ve retained. • In short: don’t regurgitate the ideas (repeat what the authors say or what I say). Do the readings, listen to the lecture (obviously the most important one), read the powerpoint, read your lecture notes and then think about what I’m asking and answer the question in your own words. If you do all this, I can pretty much promise you you’ll do well. And don’t worry! Perfection is impossible and boring. And you can’t learn if you’re not willing to make mistakes.
