The Implicit Association Test (“IAT”) (Banaji & Greenwald, 2013) is one of the most well-known tools available to tap into different types of implicit social attitudes (implicit biases). This test and its controversies are discussed in pages 415-416 of your text.
You will be writing a paper in which you make an argument about the validity and applicability of the IAT. Prior to starting this paper, you need to participate in an experiential activity (you will take an Implicit Association Test), and then research the IAT. The specific steps you will need to do in preparation are as follows:
1. Complete an online Implicit Associations Test at https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/ (Links to an external site.) From this homepage, click “Project Implicit Social Attitudes.” You will be asked to agree to a disclaimer, and then will be directed to a list of different Implicit Association Tests, each measuring different social attitudes. Choose one of these tests to complete for this assignment. You can select any of the available tests. The test will take approximately ten minutes to complete.
2. Review your results, reflect on what you have learned, and document your reactions. (Note: you will not be submitting or reporting your actual scores. We want to respect your confidentiality on this sensitive subject). 3. Review the section in your text which covers the IAT (pages 415-416) – screenshots of the text will be provided as well as the cover page so that the text can be referenced properly.
4. Read the supplemental materials about the IAT which are posted at: https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/iatdetails.html
5. Find at least one additional article from a peer reviewed journal which relates to the validity of the IAT. Finally, you will write a formal, cohesive essay in which you make a specific argument about the validity and usefulness /applicability of the IAT. (A formal, cohesive essay includes a main argument and supporting arguments all backed by detailed explanation and examples). Your supporting facts should be grounded (and properly cited) by the text, supplemental articles and other materials, and the peer-reviewed article that you found as part of your research. Somewhere in the essay, you should also reflect upon your experience taking and obtaining results of a specific IAT. Technical Requirements: Paper should be a minimum of 2-3 full pages double-spaced, 12 point font, double-spaced, with one-inch margins. All factual statements made in your paper (and all papers in this class) must be properly cited (both in-text and as a full reference in the reference page) using APA format. As evidence for your arguments, you should be thoughtfully referencing (and properly citing) what you have learned from the text, the relevant supplemental materials, and at least one additional peer-reviewed article
