In this assignment (watch the video), you are given 3 websites which you are asked to evaluate on the criteria of authority, accuracy, objectivity, and currency. Using the guide questions below, you will see what you can find about each criteria on the 3 websites I’ve given you (note: you do not need to answer ALL of the questions below, but rather, use them as a guide to make an overall assessment). Then you will determine whether the websites are credible enough for you to (hypothetically) use them in an academic paper.

Criteria for Evaluating Sources:

Authority ·

Is the website published with a .edu or a .gov? ·       Who is the author of the material you are reading? Is there a person or group responsible for the content? ·       Can you tell if the author has any credentials or knowledge of what they are talking about? ·       Who is the publisher/sponsor of the material (just the same as books are written by authors and then published by publishers, the same can happen with websites)?

Accuracy ·

Does the information you are reading match up with other sources you’ve read about the subject? ·       Is the information presented in an organized manner? Are there dead links? Spelling errors? ·       Are there references included with the information presented? Are there links to other sources?

Objectivity ·

What’s the purpose of the website? To inform? To entertain? To persuade? To sell you something? ·       Is the information presented in a fair or balanced way? ·       Is the information sponsored by another group or organization with a specific agenda in mind? Currency ·       How timely is the information? ·       When was the information published on the Web? What is the date of the article you are reading? When was the information last updated or copyrighted? ·       Does the timeliness of the information affect you using the information in your paper?
