Your task in this essay is to put forward a proposal on how your religious community (or one near you) might respond ideally to death and dying in pandemic. How might the community make meaning of death in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic in a way that attends to the RITUAL, SPIRITUAL, EMOTIONAL, MATERIAL, etc. needs of the dying and of their surrounding community? What stories and beliefs should be told or retold? What rituals should be performed, modified, or newly created? What other habits or practices should the community be sure to carry out? Propose THREE TO FIVE elements for your chosen community’s response to the pandemic.
As noted above, these might include the restatement of existing PRACTICES/STORIES/RITUALS (with explanation of how each fosters a good dying in pandemic), the adaptation of things existing, the strategic discontinuation of present practices/stories/rituals, or the addition of something new. Each of these elements should include a robust statement of how it gives good meaning to death or engenders circumstances for a good dying or grieving of death in pandemic. I encourage you to attend not only to death as a personal phenomenon in pandemic but as something that is also socially constructed. I.e., How should your chosen community respond to death in pandemic as something also structured by social death? What practices/stories/rituals might help reshape death and dying at the intersection of pandemic and social death? As in the other essays for this course, you may write about a community you view as your own or one that “near you.”
