The Sustainability of Traditional Aboriginal Culture in the Face of the Industrialization of Resource Extraction
Rudi Volti, in his chapter entitled “Technology and Jobs: More of One and Less of the Other?”, wades into the debate regarding the impact of technological change on employment. Do new, productivity-enhancing industrial technologies displace labour and drive-up unemployment rates? Or do they create new jobs and generate net employment gains? Furthermore, how do these new industrial technologies affect the distribution of income? Are there winners and losers?
While these are important questions, some have argued that what may be at stake for Canada’s Indigenous peoples is much greater than mere jobs and income; namely, the possibility that new industrial technologies may actually destroy the traditional culture and way of life of Canada’s Northern Indigenous populations.
