In the two journal articles for your reading, several historical and current laws were discussed that have negatively impacted African Americans. Share your thoughts on legislations you consider are harmful for African American equality.
- In your opinion, what do you feel has been a good historical or current law?
- Explain how it has positively impacted African Americans.
- Describe some of the changes you would like to see in improving the Hate Crime Law.
- Why do you feel knowing about different laws both good and bad can help in your cross-cultural work with African Americans?
Read Chapter 13 in your textbook Cultural Diversity: A Primer for the Human Services. In Chapter 13, Dr. Veronique Thompson, a tenured professor and graduate of HBCU (historically Black colleges and universities) shares k ey values and characteristics common to African Americans and the factors shaping their experience such as slavery, racism, and discrimination. She discusses subpopulations at risk such as Black male, Black female, Black children born into poverty, and Black LGBTQ community. The two articles explore how historical and current laws have oppressed African Americans in the U.S.
