The premise of cognitive behavior therapy is that behavior is maintained by its consequences. Behavior problems are caused by dysfunctional patterns of reinforcement between parent and child. Behavior will remain the same and resistant to change unit more rewarding consequences are introduced. Cognitive behavior therapists focus more on the need for a change in attitude and interpretations. They evaluate cognitive distortions. In healthy families, members are able to speak openly and directly about conflicts, keep issues in perspective, and discuss specific behaviors that are of concern to them. Each is willing and able to understand the other’s point of view. Good relationships are the product of learning effective coping behavior. The capacity of adaptability, flexibility, and change are also emphasized. Family rules should be comprehensive and flexible and dispense equity. Positive control should be the primary mode of reinforcement rather than punishment and coercion.

Goals of Therapy
