Simplified, Cognitive Distortions are faulty thinking patterns typically exhibited by those with a mental illness. Talking through these can sometimes help clients identify and reframe the thinking patterns that are causing, or exacerbating their symptoms and/or diagnosis. For example, those with anxiety sometimes fixate on the “What ifs” of situations. At a certain point, they may struggle to see the difference between their irrational thinking and reality. The first step in helping a client move beyond Cognitive Distortions is to be able to spot them yourself!
