Various life experiences, personalities, behaviors, or other issues in living can make the same diagnosis look very different from one client to the next. While the DSM can provide helpful diagnostic criteria, it does not address the “why” of the mental illness or the unique aspects that might impact that client.

Case Vignette:
Theresa Jones was hospitalized for the third time in one year. She complained that she was unable to eat, slept twenty hours a day, could not get out of the house to go to work, stopped seeing her friends, and felt suicidal all the time. Theresa has dark blonde hair with gold highlights, wears her hair pulled back in a bow and weighs about 120 pounds. This past year she has been unable to keep her job as a bookkeeper. Her husband, Eddie, got disgusted with Theresa’s “loafing around” and left her. After her last hospitalization, Theresa had been well for several months. Soon after feeling some improvement, she stopped taking her medication.
