Write an internal proposal addressing a need on campus, in your community, or in a workplace or business setting. Your primary audience will be the decision makers who are in a position to address the problem you’ve identified. Other members of your audience will probably include other members of the community and other administrators, managers, or committee members. Keep the attitudes and interests of your entire audience in mind.
- The audience and context you are addressing in the proposal is your choice; just be sure there is a clearly defined problem you are addressing through your proposal.
- Include only the formal elements of an internal proposal detailed in Reave’s article “Promoting Innovation in the Workplace: The Internal Proposal.” Try to make your proposal as persuasive, believable, complete, and professional as possible. Your ability to demonstrate that you can write an effective proposal can only enhance your career options. A suggested length for this proposal is a maximum of five pages. Typically, a focused, concise unsolicited internal proposal will be about 3-4 pages maximum.
- Summarize your proposal [the abstract]: briefly but completely; we are a nation of “skimmers,” not readers; Organize your proposal clearly (consider using a Table of Contents), and if you’re using more than fivevisuals, include a List of Illustrations or Figures. Typical Organization Plans include:
o Name of company, writer, writers, submitting proposal o Date on which the proposal was completed- 2. Table of contents (optional)o Provide complete, clear listing of contents (If you want to learn how to create a TOC automatically with MS Word, please ask.)

- Highlight the importance of your proposal.
- 6 Discussion: o “Sell” your product, service, or suggested solution. Provide any or all of the following
- components:
- Describe proposed work or action
- Options
- Method or Procedure
- Schedule (anticipated concerns and how they will be handled)
- 7 Conclusion/recommendationo Sum up your proposal and provide a sense of closure (ethos, pathos, logos) o If appropriate restate the problem, your solution, and the probable benefits
- 8. Works cited page or footnotes/endnotes (as necessary)o If you’ve used research materials, reference them here
- o Make sure to use standard citation format consistently and accurately (e.g., MLA , APA,Chicago, etc. citations. You may also select to use footnotes or endnotes in a professional, non-academic internal proposal. I can help you do a great job with endnotes if you want to try using them.)
