SUMMARY ANALYSIS
Assignment Requirements: 2-3 pages, typed, double-spaced, MLA format, with a Works Cited
page that lists the citations of the chapters from which you’re quoting.
The essay should have a clear introduction, a body that summarizes the key points, analyzes
the ideas and the ways in which the writer presents the ideas, and that draws conclusions about
the ideas in your conclusion. Try quoting from the chapters and the sections to help support
your findings and your ideas, and include in-text citations as well as a works cited page.
You’ll be graded on your cohesive introduction and conclusion, your ability to coherently
summarize and represent the key ideas from the sections, and then your clear topic sentences
and paragraphs.
DESCRIPTION OF ASSIGNMENT:
Composing a summary analysis is an important way to demonstrate your understanding of a
text — not only what the text means, but how the writer is presenting the information. From this
exercise of close reading and annotation, you can compose an essay that summarizes the key
points of the text, analyzes the way the text was written and the ideas that are shared, and then
an essay in which you draw some conclusions about the material.
These questions will be helpful as you draw conclusions:
1. Review not only the content revealed by your analysis but also the way the piece
was written. What seem to be the key values and assumptions that the author
shares with readers? Are there areas of conflicts in values and assumptions among
the participants in this conversation (including the authors and readers)? Explain.
2. How does this text compare and contrast to others on the same or similar subjects?
Identify the text(s) you are comparing/contrasting (such as the Allure article on
Beauty). Refer specifically the areas above in explaining the key similarities and
differences in purpose, topic, audience, etc.
For this essay, I’ll be looking for your ability to represent the ideas of Robert Holden’s
Introduction and section 1 of his text, and you can pull in ideas from the assigned library
article and Ted Talk this week as well.
